Envelope of Skin
Dorothy Molloy
In an envelope of skin,
in a box of bone
I live. Jointed arms,
legs, fingers, toes,
ankles, elbows,
shoulders. The small
shovels of my collarbone.
The caterpillar of my
spine. The wide plates
of my hips.
In an envelope of skin,
in a box of bone
I live. Endless skeins
of hair pushed through
the epidermis. A hundred
years' supply of nail crouches
inside my fingertips
and under the cushions
of my toes.
Drums hide in the swirl
of my ear; a bridge
crosses my nose.
My belly a factory,
a recycling plant,
a compost heap.
My pelvis a girdle,
a breeding-ground,
a nursery.
The sponges of my lungs,
the pump of the heart,
the pulse at wrist
and neck
and temple.
Alone in my cave
I quest, striking matches
as I go. Paintings
in blood and excrement glow
on my palaeolithic walls.
Pensieri alla Ruskin
Elma Mitchell
Le donne gli ricordavano gigli e rose.
A me ricordano piuttosto sangue e sapone,
tengono cuori a sanguinare sotto l’acqua corrente,
eviscerano e farciscono, mettono sottaceto e conservano,
sbollentano, sbiancano, gratinano, polverizzano,
asfissiano mosche, sfrattano ragni,
strofinano, sfregano con gran rumore e buttano all’aria credenze,
affidano cose a pattumiere, torcono, strizzano,
polsi rossi , nocche bianche e dita raggrinzite,
polpute, tiepide. Manovrano aspirapolvere stridenti
imboccano cibo, incoraggiano l’evacuazione,
rapida occhiata all’orologio e vanno di sopra,

Toughts after Ruskin
Elma Mitchell
Women reminded him of lilies and roses.
Me they remind rather of blood and soap,
Armed with a warm rag, assaulting noses,
Ears, neck, mouth and all the secret places:
Armed with a sharp knife, cutting up liver,
Holding hearts to bleed under a running tap,
Gutting and stuffing, pickling and preserving,
Scalding, blanching, broiling, pulverizing,
- All the terrible chemistry of their kitchens.
Their distant husbands lean across mahogany
And delicately manipulate the market,
While safe at home, the tender and the gentle
Are killing tiny mice, dead snap by the neck,
Asphyxiating flies, evicting spiders,
Scrubbing, scouring aloud, disturbing cupboards,
Committing things to dustbins, twisting, wringing,
Wrists red and knuckles white and fingers puckered,
Pulpy, tepid. Steering screaming cleaners
Around the snags of furniture, they straighten
And haul out sheets from under the incontinent
And heavy old, stoop to importunate young,
Tugging, folding, tucking, zipping, buttoning,
Spooning in food, encouraging excretion,
Mopping up vomit, stabbing cloth with needles,
Contorting wool around their knitting needles,
Creating snug and comfy on their needles.
Their huge hands! their everywhere eyes! their voices
Raised to convey across the hullabaloo,
Their massive thighs and breasts dispensing comfort,
Their bloody passages and hairy crannies,
Their wombs that pocket a man upside down!
And when all’s over, off with overalls,
Quickly consulting clocks, they go upstairs,
Sit and sigh a little, brushing hair,
And somehow find, in mirrors, colours, odours,
Their essences of lilies and roses.
Tributo ai miei fianchi
Lucille Clifton
questi fianchi sono fianchi larghi
hanno bisogno di spazio per
andarsene in giro
vanno dove vogliono andare
fanno quello che vogliono fare.
Questi fianchi sono fianchi possenti.
Questi fianchi sono fianchi stregati
li ho visti
lanciare un incantesimo su un uomo e
rigirarlo come una trottola!

Homage to My Hips
Lucille Clifton
these hips are big hips
they need space to
move around in.
they don’t fit into little
petty places, these hips
are free hips.
they don’t like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
These hips are mighty hips.
These hips are magic hips
I have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top!

senza sangue, forse un mostro;
il mio sangue pulsa. Fino a una bolla
nera.

In me a moonscape of organs,
bloodless, maybe a monster;
my blood thuds. Until a black
bubble. Silent, slow as a flower,
opening from limb buds,
an anemone pulse of fingers.
Under my thick skin veil,
not me, plugged; blind,
bulb-headed, spinning invisible
tissue on bones fine as fish.
Mouse-big, sparrow-hearted,
it becoming you, new from
nothing; the miraculous alien,
eel-supple in blank dreams.
And like men loving the blue
planet, the world is changed.
Per donne forti
Marge Piercy
i dotti lacrimali, e vomitare
brutta cattiva, puttana, musona, strillona, strega,
rompipalle, nessuno ricambierà mai il tuo amore,
perché non sei femminile, perché non sei
dolce, perché non stai zitta, perché
non sei morta?
Una donna forte è una donna determinata
a fare qualcosa che altri sono determinati
a non farle fare. Cerca di sollevare il coperchio di piombo
di una cassa da morto. Cerca di alzare
con la testa un tombino. Prova
forte ogni mattina, mentre i denti s’allentano
e la schiena duole. Ogni bambino,
come d’ossigeno oppure diventa cianotica.
fortemente e piange fortemente e fortemente
è terrorizzata e ha forti desideri. Una donna forte è forte
in parole, opere, relazioni, sentimenti,
e ci attraversa. Forti ci facciamo
l’una con l’altra. Finché non saremo forti tutte assieme
una donna forte è una donna fortemente spaventata.

For Strong Women
Marge Piercy
A strong woman is a woman who is straining.
A strong woman is a woman standing
on tiptoe and lifting a barbell
while trying to sing Boris Godunov.
A strong woman is a woman at work
cleaning out the cesspool of the ages,
and while she shovels, she talks about
how she doesn't mind crying, it opens
the ducts of the eyes, and throwing up
develops the stomach muscles, and
she goes on shoveling with tears
in her nose. A strong woman is a woman in whose head
a voice is repeating, I told you so,
ugly, bad girl, bitch, nag, shrill, witch,
ballbuster, nobody will ever love you back,
why aren't you feminine, why aren't
you soft, why aren't you quiet, why
aren't you dead? A strong woman is a woman determined
to do something others are determined
not be done. She is pushing up on the bottom
of a lead coffin lid. She is trying to raise
a manhole cover with her head, she is trying
to butt her way through a steel wall.
Her head hurts. People waiting for the hole
to be made say, hurry, you're so strong. A strong woman is a woman bleeding
inside. A strong woman is a woman making
herself strong every morning while her teeth
loosen and her back throbs. Every baby,
a tooth, midwives used to say, and now
every battle a scar. A strong woman
is a mass of scar tissue that aches
when it rains and wounds that bleed
when you bump them and memories that get up
in the night and pace in boots to and fro. A strong woman is a woman who craves love
like oxygen or she turns blue choking.
A strong woman is a woman who loves
strongly and weeps strongly and is strongly
terrified and has strong needs. A strong woman is strong
in words, in action, in connection, in feeling;
she is not strong as a stone but as a wolf
suckling her young. Strength is not in her, but she
enacts it as the wind fills a sail. What comforts her is others loving
her equally for the strength and for the weakness
from which it issues, lightning from a cloud.
Lightning stuns. In rain, the clouds disperse.
Only water of connection remains,
flowing through us. Strong is what we make
each other. Until we are all strong together,
a strong woman is a woman strongly afraid.

se esiste una fiumana
più magnifica di questa
fulgida come l’orlo rosso
selvaggia
fa’ che scorra anche
negli animali
piena di grazia e di lealtà e venerabile
e valorosa e femmina

Poem in Praise of Menstruation
Lucille Clifton
if there is a river
more beautiful than this
bright as the blood
red edge of the moon if
there is a river
more faithful than this
returning each month
to the same delta if there
is a river
braver than this
coming and coming in a surge
of passion, of pain if there is
a river
more ancient than this
daughter of eve
mother of cain and of abel if there is in
the universe such a river if
there is some where water
more powerful than this wild
water
pray that it flows also
through animals
beautiful and faithful and ancient
and female and brave
